Friday Favorites: the best BBQ sauce, strawberry shortcake & a drink to beat that heat wave...

Well, we made it to Labor Day weekend! First up, a way to help you stop melting...

favorite drink for the heat wave: SoCal is in the midst of a heat wave. And the rumors are true- we can't handle anything above or below 67 degrees. I couldn't even write this post without a cold drink. If you're sweating like me in SoCal or just want to have one last summery sip, drink this Watermelon & Cucumber Mojito...

favorite BBQ sauce: Labor Day BBQs were the theme this week and I couldn't possibly have my Friday Favorites without my favorite BBQ sauce. When it comes to food, I'm. all. about. the. sauce. And one of my favorite condiments is BBQ Sauce. My ideal meal is when I sit down with a variety of BBQ sauces I can eat throughout the meal. But if I had to choose one- it isn't even close-I'm all South Carolinian. How do I pick the South Carolina sauce over the tomato versions of Texas and Kansas City, the dry rubs of Memphis, or the vinegar versions of Eastern North Carolina? Easy. It must be my German roots. When the Germans settled in Central South Carolina they brought their love of mustard to the pork smoking state and the South Carolina Mustard BBQ Sauce was born. Here's one of my favorite recipes. And if you love BBQ sauce history as much as I do, read this!

favorite weekend DIY: these cheeseboard clocks from Country Living. Y'all know how much I love my cheese boards (did you see my Friday Favorites last week!) So how perfect is this cheese board clock for my kitchen?? I'll be on the lookout for the perfect board to make this...

favorite cake to bake: This weekend I'm spending the long weekend at my parents with plenty of time to bake (and BONUS someone else's kitchen to dirty! ;) ) Strawberry shortcakes are my dad's favorite but I'm going to attempt this cake recipe as a spin on the traditional recipe. I'll let you know next week how it goes!

favorite measuring spoons: how cute are these mason jar measuring spoons from World Market??? I think I'll be adding these to my kitchen...

favorite dream vacation: fall is my favorite time to travel; the temperatures are mild, school is back in session so the crowds have thinned and the leaves are changing colors (well, everywhere except here). It's been forever since Chase and I have gotten to go on vacation, but if we could take a week off tomorrow, we'd head to Wyoming and A Bar A Ranch.

Chase's favorite thing: chorizo meatballs. Hey! Look at the guest we have for Friday Favs this week! Chase is offshore but he said this was his favorite thing this week. I mentioned these yesterday on My Labor Day Menu as appetizers to serve with BBQ sauce, but Chase's deckhand made them as part of a meatball sandwich. He mixed chorizo with ground beef, slathered them with marinara sauce, topped them with fresh mozzarella cheese and served them on a sandwich roll. Now, that's a meatball sandwich if I've ever heard one! Here's my recipe:

Chorizo Meatballs:

  • 1 lb. ground pork

  • 6 oz. chorizo

  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 tablespoon parsley

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Mix all ingredients together and form desired size meatballs. Bake in a glass dish for 20-25 minutes.

That's it for today! Enjoy the long weekend!!!
