In Remembrance: 9/11 Boatlift

September 12, 2017

I can't believe it's been 16 years since September 11, 2001. I have always thought it is important for everyone to stop and remember all those who lost their lives that day and how we were all irrevocable changed by the attacks.

I was only in 9 at the time but I have very vivid memories of the day. My dad is a firefighter and his station was the closest to the tallest skyscraper in Ventura County (at 22 stories, it's mini in comparison to the World Trade Center, but at 9 they all seemed to be the same height.) I remember I worried about whether the same thing would happen to that building. I remember the utter confusion on the face of my teacher during the day. I remember my dad coming home for dinner that night and kissing my mom. I remember my dad turning off the TV, not wanting to let me see the footage of the towers falling. And most of all, I remember trying to convince myself that this was all just an accident- I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that a group of people had deliberately done this.

A few years ago I saw this video for the first time, I still get chills watching it. It is one of the untold stories surrounding 9/11. There were many heros that day; here's to remembering every one of them...
